GRAINGER HIRING APPRENTICE FOR ALDERSHOT URBAN EXTENSION PROJECT
After receiving planning consent in early July for the 3,850 new home development, the Aldershot Urban Extension, now known as Wellesley, Grainger is hiring an apprentice to work with the project team to help deliver this new exciting project.
The Aldershot Urban Extension ("AUE"), known as Wellesley, is located on the 255 hectare former Aldershot Garrison site.
Delivery of the development will be spread over a 20 year period and will create up to 3,850 new homes, 35% of which will be for social rent or shared ownership. The planning consent also allows for the following:
- a new slip road onto the A331 and associated highway improvements;
- two new primary schools, delivering 1050 new school places;
- extensions to two secondary schools, providing over 675 new school places;
- two new pre-schools and day care centres;
- 110 hectares of new managed green space, play areas, sports and community facilities; and
- the refurbishment of six listed buildings, including the Cambridge Military Hospital and Headquarters 4th Division and provision of a Heritage Trail.
The apprentice will be 16 to 24 years old and will work alongside Alan Chitson, Grainger's Development Manager, assisting with the day to day running of the Wellesley development. The apprentice will get involved in both site management and property development delivery. The ideal candidate for this apprenticeship would be a young person local to Aldershot or who has good local area knowledge.
The apprenticeship programme is part of the Government initiative to support young people to achieve nationally recognised qualifications whilst working, through the National Apprenticeship Service. The apprentice will be required to attend college one day per week for two years to achieve a level 3 NVQ Diploma.
Alan Chitson, Development Manager at Grainger plc, said: “We’re really excited about hiring an apprentice for Wellesley. It’s a great opportunity to work on one of the UK’s biggest residential developments and to learn first-hand how to deliver such an exciting, big project.”
Councillor Peter Moyle, Leader of Rushmoor Borough Council: “We’re thrilled to see that Grainger will be taking on an apprentice and helping a local young person to get a foot on the employment ladder. The Council has already employed several apprentices and are encouraging other local employers to do the same. We have seen for ourselves the value, enthusiasm and skills that they bring to your organisation. Last year, we challenged businesses to provide 100 local apprenticeships in 100 days and the campaign was such a success that 140 young people are now in paid employment”
The apprenticeship programme is a great opportunity for the apprentice to receive high quality training and support to start their career in residential development.
